If you need to take a CAD file to a cutting mill, you would need to know a different program to successfully cut your part, but not if you decide to use MeshCAM. The software can load your CAD files and create efficient tool paths for you, based on your measurements. It is designed to be as simple and easy to use as possible, but despite its simple appearance, it comes with a powerful functionality under its hood.

MeshCAM is free to try for 15 days, with some limitations. It comes in a small package and it can be installed quickly, without making any complicated settings. The software doesn't rely on any special tools or services and its hardware requirements are modest.

MeshCAM works with STL and DXF file formats, which are quite common for most 3D CAD programs. Alternatively, you can load 2D parts and extrude them until you get 3D parts. Once you load a file, the part will show up in a 3D environment, where you can zoom, move, rotate and pan the camera using only the mouse.

To create a tool path, you will need to specify a series of dimensions and other values. You can bring up various input windows, through the options on the left side of the user interface. The software lets you define a stock and supports, retract the object's height, set a maximum depth, specify machining areas and more. It is also possible to drill and cap holes.

Everything involves making simple selections or specifying relevant values in the appropriate fields, but it should go without saying that you need to know everything about your part and its dimensions. You may specify a wide range of tool path parameters. The software lets you choose specific tools and define specific values for all stages, from roughing to finishing. With your parameters properly added, the software will draw the ideal tool path for your part immediately.

When it comes to cutting a CAD project at a mill, MeshCAM can do all the heavy lifting for you.

Pros

The software can draw a tool path, based on your parameters. It works with files from all popular CAD programs.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to address.
